Drink what you like

Beer Sommelier?
Ambassador of brewing
or simple beer snob?

Written by Captain Hops.

References: There seems to be a buzz around the blogosphere over the term Beer Sommelier. (see Joe Sixpack, Appellation Beer Blog, On the House, Brookston Beer Bulletin)

The controversy seems to be about whether the term Beer Sommelier is too hoity toity an expression for the up-till-now democratic and common world of beer. Beer advocates want to figure out how to raise respect for the ever increasing variety and quality of today’s craft beers without falling into the snob trap.

I find myself falling on the side of Joe Sixpack who is promoting the idea of Cellarman (or Cellarwoman) and his vision of what such person could bring to the beer drinking world. However, that name doesn’t really take us very far from the wine connotations he seems to be trying to avoid.

I like the idea of Beer Sherpa - the nameless, faceless, hardworking guide that helps you reach your beer drinking summit. Or what about Beer Buddy? This is a person that is going to get to know the real you and help you make a choice that will be best for you. Everybody wants a Beer Buddy at their favorite restaurant and beer bar!

Both of these names imply an unpretentious, knowledgeable, and hardworking person that people can trust. Frankly, whether they are drinking Natty Boh or Old Crustacean, those are the characteristics to which beer drinkers relate.
